London: Thos McLean, 1829. The title refers to a satirical play of the time, but here are the Irish politicians John Lawless; Daniel O'Connell; Richard Lalor Sheil. Obviously Doyle is referencing Irish agitation, but also perhaps the Catholic emancipation act of 1829. Clear image, with some light water staining across the whole image. Pasted onto a mustard card backing. Backing card is chipped and tatty to the edges but could be neatly trimmed. Print is 35cm x 26cm. Backing card is 51cm x 36cm Conforms to National Portrait Gallery item NPG D40943. . John Doyle was born in Dublin and moved to London in 1822 where he initially worked as a portrait lithographer. In 1827 Doyle began publishing political prints anonymously. From 1829-1851 Doyle published his well-known Political Sketches series, signing his work with the initials "HB" to hide his identity.

London: Weidenfeld, 1972. First UK edition. A lovely association copy (of sorts). From the library of Lord Harold Davies of Leek, with a tipped in TLS from Sir Harold Wilson to Lord Leek. The letter is a single sheet, on House of Commons note paper, and refers to his studying Cabinet memoranda during the summer recess of 1978. The book itself, in original blue and red dust wrapper. Red cloth with gilt titles. In addition to the letter from Wilson, there is the ownership signature of Rt Hon Lord Davis of Leek PC to the ffep. There are also some interesting marginalia, some are just penciled ticks or references, others more significant. For example he contradicts an American statement by Johnson with the comment "This was known when I went to Hanoi" Lord Leek was a Labour MP, and Wilson's PPS, who undertook a peace mission to Vietnam at Wilson's behest. His "secret" mission was revealed before he arrived, to the fury of the Americans, and led to him being ignored by Ho Chi Minh. His mission is referenced in this book p581. Dust wrapper is good, a little rubbed and some closed tears internally taped. Now held in an archival sleeve. The book is in very good condition. 24 x 16.5cm. 630 pages.

Aldershot: Gale and Polden Ltd, 1954. First edition in dust wrapper. The wrapper has significant chipping and closed tears, but is still holding together, and is reasonably clean. Held within an archival wrapper. Red cloth boards are clean and tidy, with just a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine. A touch of foxing to the closed page edges. 15 black and white photographs, 5 maps. Complete. 119 pages. 190 by 125mm (7½ by 5 inches).

London: Kent & Co, 1862. A lovely bound copy of the first year of this scarce fashion magazine. 12 issues from July 1862 - June 1863. Each issue is comprised of 4 pages of text accompanied by a folding / double page engraved diagram. These show cutting patterns for gentleman's clothing, (and one has a skeleton with accompanied text). To the rear are 10 full page colour illustrations with attractive hand colouring, showing fashions of the day. These with the mark of the fashion plate printer Louis-Joseph Mariton. In later gilt lettered three quarter leather binding. 270 x 210 mm (10¾ x 8¼ inches).

The Metropolitan Foremen Tailors' Society was formed in 1850. In 1862 they began the "West-End Gazette"
to provide patterns and illustrations of the clothing available. This collection of the first year's publication has been bound up - the binder has mistakenly stated "1850" to the spine rather than 1862/3 as should be embossed there.

The ten articles collected here were originally published in the French newspaper 'Le Journal', when SEM worked as their war correspondent during WW1. SEM's real name was Georges Goursat (1863 - 1934). Première édition. A été relié en toile brune, avec titre estampé doré au dos. Papier d'origine du dos, collé à l'intérieur du premier plat. London: Vanity Fair, 1880. A Victorian "art album" with 44 colour lithographs from Vanity fair tipped in to the left page. Opposite each, the biographical details by Jehu Jr is also tipped in. (Vanity Fair was founded by Thomas Gibson Bowles, AKA Jehu Junior, in 1868). The subjects are largely politicians (British and Irish) members of the aristocracy and military men. Beautiful caricatures by Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy" Carlo Pellegrini or "Ape", "T". The album itself is decorated and embossed in black and gilt on a green cloth base. The outside of the album is in good clean condition. Inside, there is darkening and old foxing to the end papers, and the pages are darkened and a little brittle to the stiff art card, but the text and lithographs are in very good condition. 380 x 330 mm (15 x 13 inches). Paris: Parsons, Galignani et Compagnie, 1808. Second edition. Bound in quarter red morocco, marbled blue card boards and ornate gilt-stamped titles to spine. Complete with engraved frontis portrait. This is a French translation, by J. Martinet, of the memoirs of the notorious public life, and colourful private life, of the late Right Honourable Charles-James Fox. Spine shows very little sign of wear, and boards are just a little scuffed. Internally, the pages are toned, particularly to the front. Evidence of a small bookplate having been removed from front pastedown.

Charles-James Fox (1749-1806), was a prominent British statesman whose opinions in favour of the American War of Independence became some of the most radical ever to be aired in the Parliament of his era.

Fox's parliamentary career spanned 38 years of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and he was the arch-rival of William Pitt the Younger.

Charles-James Fox (1749-1806), était un éminent homme d'État britannique dont les opinions en faveur de la guerre d'indépendance américaine sont devenues parmi les plus radicales jamais exprimées au Parlement de son époque.

La carrière parlementaire de Fox a duré 38 ans à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle, et il était le grand rival de William Pitt le Jeune.

A second edition of the "Voiage du Monde de Descartes" bound in with a First Thus (Amsterdam) copy of the "Suite du voyage du Monde". Unfortunately the First volume lacks the double plate of the Moon. It contains the 18 woodcuts showing celestial systems. The second volume contains 12 woodcuts. Original full leather binding with gilt details to the spine. (Somewhat faded to the spine). The binding is cracking to the hinges with some nicking, but is still holding together. Internally the books are clean and tidy with a little darkening and a couple of isolated foxing spots only. A couple of contemporary inked notes to the inside board. [xiv], 308., [viii], 248. pp. 160 x 100 mm (6¼ x 4 inches). The first volume is scarce in early editions. At the time of writing this description, there are no copies of the "Suite du voyage" available.

These works were the written by the Jesuit Priest, Father Gabriel Daniel (1649-1728), known for his activity as a historiographer and for his History of France. It relates Imaginary journey around the Cartesian universe, composed in the form of satire in the company of Father Mersenne, the author mainly fights the system of vortices. The debate on the question of the Void and Celestial Mechanics was one of the most important of the second half of the 17th century, and all the scientists and metaphysicians of the time brought their point of view to it. Daniel was opposed to Cartesian philosophy, and these treatise are mainly aimed at attacking his Treatise on Light (Published in 1664).

Ces ouvrages ont été écrits par le Prêtre Jésuite, le Père Gabriel DANIEL (1649-1728), connu pour son activité d'historiographe et pour son Histoire de France. Il relate Voyage imaginaire autour de l'univers cartésien, composé sous forme de satire en compagnie du Père Mersenne, l'auteur combat principalement le système des tourbillons. Le débat sur la question du Vide et de la Mécanique Céleste fut l'un des plus importants de la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, et tous les scientifiques et métaphysiciens de l'époque y apportèrent leur point de vue. Daniel était opposé à la philosophie cartésienne, et ces traités visent principalement à attaquer son Traité de la lumière (publié en 1664).

London: Court Circular, 1860. Two volumes of bound issues of this newsheet. Folio. 3/4 brown leather with buckram boards. Vol. 1 contains issues 21-52. (March 17th 1860 - October 20th 1860) Vol. 2 contains issues 79-104 (April 27th 1861 - October 19th 1981). There are also a number of "supplements" to the gazette. A total of 56 issues. In Vol. 1 Each is separately paginated, generally 16 pages long. Some pages have been bound incorrectly, but all seem to be present. Vol. 2 is numbered 417-836 pp. Initially entitled the "Volunteer Service Gazette and Militia Dispatch" From August 25th 1860, the name was shortened to "Volunteer Service Gazette."
370 by 260mm (14½ by 10¼ inches). Volunteer Services & Forces Newspapers were aimed at the volunteer services and regular army and navy, and flourished in the nineteenth century. In 1859 a new corps of volunteers was formed to supplement both the militia and the regular army in case of invasion. These rifle brigades attracted members from those able to afford to purchase their own uniform and rifle, which could amount to £8 -12. Newspaper proprietors responded to this wave of patriotism by creating newspapers to disseminate news of the military and the volunteer forces. Issues of the Volunteer Service Gazette carried reports on the various volunteer units, including descriptions of their uniforms and the progress of their drill and weapons training.

These papers also included news of the movements and engagements of the regular army and navy. The posting of officers and the movement of troops are treated in great detail. These papers will tell you where a regiment was on a given date, at home or abroad. There were also an increasing number of advertisements for rifles, apparel and equipment as time went on.
